In 2012, my best friend was fighting for her life in a Minneapolis cancer center. I was sending her care packages from Denver which largely consisted of things I made to make her laugh: like a card I crafted with a big letter "C" so she could "play the C card" whenever she wanted. (She used it when she was feeling better to win a few games of Phase 10 and get extra desserts in her hospital room.) But when she was first diagnosed with neuroblastoma, things were bad. Like so bad they had to put her in a coma to keep her alive. According to all the doctors, the odds were not in her favor. Before I went out to live with her for a bit and take her to radiation appointments, I made her necklaces and stamped the word "fearless" onto the pendants, hoping the message would sink into her mind and body so that just maybe it could be like a bit of magic to slay this dragon. She said whenever I made her this "Metal Mojo," she wore them like a suit of armor as though she was heading into battle. And it WAS a battle. She wore her "Metal Mojo" to chemo, radiation, surgery, a stem cell transplant... she said those pieces were a reminder of her strength & stamina when her body felt like it was shutting down.
It was a scary few years, but I'm happy to report my bestie kicked her cancer to the curb! I'm also glad she urged me to start my own business to make "Metal Mojo" for others. I love when my customers share with me how their personalized gifts bring strength and support to their friends and family. Whether we're struggling with an illness or facing a daunting chapter in life, having a little token in our pocket, an inspirational keychain, or special jewelry to wear (whether it's a private message on a bracelet or a statement piece around our neck) can give us a shot of courage or a reminder of our determination.
I have branched out a lot since I started my business. My collections have grown to include gemstone jewelry, sports and fitness accessories like custom golfball markers and shoe tags, and unique gifts for every event from weddings and graduations to Father's Day and congratulating your kids on earning their blackbelts! :) Whether you're running your 1st marathon, having a baby, or struggling with loss, illness or divorce, "Metal Mojo" lets you express your gratitude, excitement or empathy. (And it's rad because I can personalize it however you want!)
My favorite pieces to make are personalized necklaces with kids' names, and also memorial jewelry since that is truly a treasured keepsake. I love fitness and staying active, so I really enjoy making "Metal Mojo" related to weightlifting, workouts and martial arts to inspire and empower others whether they compete in Brazilian JiuJitsu tournaments, CrossFit competitions, or are simply making themselves stronger, healthier and more confident.
I've had a career as a news reporter and a writer, producer and director for cable television shows. But this business venture has been such a meaningful, creative and passionate experience. Through the years, I've also taught self defense and martial arts (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Muay Thai) and helped people with strength training and getting healthy & fit (which are some of my own passions in life). It's so rewarding to create gifts for people motivating their friends to reach their goals! Meaningful messages stamped onto jewelry, keychains, etc for coaches, teachers, parents, partners, kids, etc. My BFF was my inspiration in starting my business, and it's been a privilege to create "Metal Mojo" that commemorates a special event, celebrates a milestone, or simply makes someone feel special.

I'm also an advocate and volunteer with victims of sexual assault & domestic violence and I often give my “Metal Mojo” to people I meet and admire. I think it's important we care about our communities and support one another. When we merge our mojo, we are stronger together! A percentage of my proceeds go to non-profit centers that help victims of sexual assault and domestic violence so every purchase helps someone in need. Thank you for your support!
When I'm not working or making jewelry, I unwind by lifting weights, swimming, hiking, rock climbing, paddleboarding and training martial arts --primarily Muay Thai and BJJ. I also teach self defense and love empowering others! Check out my site: facebook.com/NoMeansKnowSelfDefense
Oh, and I gotta give props to my supportive and patient hubs and my faithful Mojo-makin' companion, our lovable Rhodesian Ridgeback rescue, Thorvi! She's got a piercing stare, doesn't she? ;)
